Next round of the finals of the African Cup of Nations this Saturday. Nigeria is struggling with Cameroon. Both teams want to advance to the quarter-finals.
Considered a serious candidate for the title before even starting the competition, Nigeria did not really reassure observers during the group stage. The Super Eagles have however started well this CAN by winning, without convincing, their first 2 games against Burundi (1-0) and Guinea (1-0). During the third day, they lost to Madagacar, leaving the group’s first place to this opponent.
African champion in title, Cameroon appears more in withdrawal in this CAN. With a less interesting squad than in 2017, the Indomitable Lions finished 2nd in Group F. After logically dominating Guinea-Bissau for their entry in the running (2-0), they conceded the sharing of points against Ghana (0-0) and Benin (0-0) in the last 2 days.
Nigeria are led by experienced midfielder John Obi Mikel, who is playing the lead in the selection. In defense, the former Nantes Awaziem and the Udinese player Troost-Ekong stand out, as well as defensive midfielders Ndidi (Leicester) and Etebo (Stoke) who do a lot of work to recover. If the front center position is not yet well defined because neither Ighalo nor Onuachu have really convinced, Gernot Rohr does not lack the choice for wingers with Iwobi (Arsenal), Chukwueze (Villarreal) and Musa ( al-Nassr).
For Cameroon, the excellent goalkeeper Ajax Onana has logically imposed in the goals despite the good performance of Ondoa at the coronation of 2017. Otherwise, the names are called Mandjeck, Zambo Anguissa, Toko Ekambi and Bassogog. In competition with Angevin Bahoken, the PSG striker Choupo-Moting is not guaranteed to hold.
